Hello eatwellers, how has your week been? We hope it has been great like ours. We wish all our Muslim readers Ed El-Kabir.
Now to the business of the day. Often times I hear many of my female friends complain of how they dread their menstruation period. This is generally due to the pain and discomfort they experience during this period. Occasionally, the pain could interfere with their daily activities and render some bedridden.
I had always suspected that the pain most ladies experience during menstruation is closely related to their eating habit. I observed that those who ate clean usually didn’t always have menstrual cramp. However, those who were junk lovers felt the most pain during menstruation.
I will be sharing four very effective food that can prevent/reduce menstrual cramp. This article is going to be brief but on point.
Drink more Water.
It doesn’t sound like a big deal right? Usually, the little things that we ignore are often the most effective or helpful remedies. Do you know that drinking water will keep your body hydrated which helps to prevent painful bloating during menstruation. You can decide to use either warm water or hot water for your cramps. It is also important to eat food with high water content such as watermelon, oranges, cucumber and berries.
Consume High Calcium Food.
It is recommended that women within the age of 19-50years consume approximately 1,000mg of calcium daily. Always ensure that you drink milk, yogurt instead of carbonated drinks during menstruation period. Also, leafy vegetables such as spinach, jute mallow(ewedu), fluted pumpkin (ugwu) should be eaten to provide your body with the needed amount of calcium. Calcium helps to reduce muscle cramping during menstruation.
Ginger can be used in various forms depending on your choice. Whether it is blended, dried, fresh or grated it will serve its purpose in soothing menstrual cramps. Ginger also provides an excellent
source of manganese, iron, calcium and dietary fiber.
These minerals actively help to relieve menstruation symptoms. To get the best from your ginger, grate a small piece of ginger, add it to hot water, and drink for menstrual cramp relief.

Pawpaw also known as papaya has amazing nutritional benefits and it is very effective in reducing menstrual cramp to a considerable level. I advise that you eat pawpaw prior to when you start your menstruation. When you eat papaya, the effect is that the nutrients present in it such as vitamin A,C and carotene assist in soothing the walls of the uterus which therefore ease the contraction of the fibre muscles. What this does is that it reduces the effect of the menstrual cramp/pain
Food you Must Avoid.
Prior to or during menstruation, avoid these food has they increase the occurrence of menstrual cramps/pain. They are:
1) Fatty food.
2) Carbonated drinks.
3) Coffee or substances high in caffeine.
